About kitz.co.uk info

kitz.co.uk is one of the UK's largest DSL broadband resource & information sites.

This site contains a wealth of information such as how ADSL & VDSL (fibre) broadband works.
There's tips on choosing an ISP, help comparing ISP prices and ISP performance.

A large section of the site is devoted to self help diagnostics and what to do if you run into problems with your broadband connection, such as how to get dsl line stats from your router to understanding how such things as SNR and attenuation can affect your connection. There's also a vast array of tutorials and FAQs about broadband.

It is independently run and a not for profit site.  Unlike some broadband sites, we do not focus only on ISPs which pay commission. Although the site is well known and respected within the ISP industry, our position means that we are free to tell you 'as it is' and allows us to carry information on far more ISPs than most other broadband comparison sites.

If you have a broadband problem and need some help - or just want to say hello - our community forum is frequented by many knowledgeable people, who may be able to assist you. We are a family friendly oriented site so please feel free to join us.

The site is continually expanding, with new pages being added or amended. New pages are normally announced on the Forum.

xx Ookla speed test results in forum signatures.

May 13, 2021, 06:05:36 AM by kitz
It has recently been brought to our attention that size of some of the ookla speed test results used in signatures have become rather large and can be up to 6x that of the actual forum post.  We have already asked some users to please amend their signatures.

Whilst re-reading an old thread last night, I noticed a post from 2019 where the users signature was literally taking over the whole thread with these enormous graphical results.  It looked pretty awful (not to mention monotonous and overbearing) as I scrolled down the page on a PC, so goodness knows what it must be like on a mobile device.  :(

To give an indication; these images are 750 x 400 pixels on a monitor with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080... which in old money is 9 x 5 inches.  If you are anything like me and often have other things on the go and never view your browser in full window mode, then this one image is literally taking over half my visible window.  When the same user posts more than one reply in a thread, it soon becomes messy and an eyesore.

Based on the fact that this particular user hasn't visited the forum for a couple of months I can only assume that Ookla has recently changed something their side as I'm not aware of it being a problem until the past week.   I have tried to set a limit on the maximum signature size, but this doesn't appear to have any effect on signatures that were previously in place before I made the changes.

If you do have an Ookla speed test result in your signature, would you please check its size and if necessary, change or remove it.   Admins will automatically delete any that we come across without any notification to yourselves.
Thank you for understanding.

The Kitz team wishes you all a happy and healthy Christmas, with the hope that life will be a lot better in the near future.
Sadly, Kitz isn't able to be with us this Christmas due to illness, but she sends you all her best wishes. I'm sure that you will all join me in returning these wishes and hoping that she recovers very soon. :flower:

xx Site down 14/15 May

May 15, 2020, 11:57:05 AM by kitz
Apologies for the site being down overnight.

As yet i havent been given a full explanation by my webhosts other than it was a network issue affecting their CPanel servers.    I did contact them last night only to be told they were undertaking routine maintenance.   However by about midnight i began to suspect it was something more as I still had access to the server for other things aside from web (http).   I tried restarting various services such as Apache without success and escalated the fault adding my own findings.

I was also trying to provide any updates via the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Kitz.co.uk/ which i use for any status notices.

Because i still had access to other services, it was clear that web traffic started to die sometime around 8:30pm.  The only info i have so far for the outage reason is below

Quote
We are currently investigating an issue with some of our cPanel servers (shared, VPS and DS). The sites hosted on these servers are timing out and not responding. We will keep you updated with more information!
Please excuse us for the caused inconvenience so far!

Update

It appears that the issue is network related and we are working on resolving it as soon as possible. Thank you for the understanding!

Thank you those who attempted to notify me that there was an issue... and thanks for your patience and understanding.

xx Maintenance 5/6 May 2020

May 03, 2020, 11:45:13 PM by kitz
I've been advised by my hosts that the server will be down for a short-time during off peak for scheduled maintenance.

Quote
The work is now inked in to take place on May 5th, outside of business hours before 8am and after 5pm.

If work isn't completed before midnight on the 5th we'll continue on the 6th again, outside of business hours. Although we don't expect to need this time.

There will be a few minutes of downtime while we carry out this work and we apologise for any inconvenience this causes.
