MaxDSL - The Reality

adsl bar

I have separate pages that explain what maxdsl is and how maxdsl works, this page is just a record of my own personal experience.

The Reality.

So how does maxDSL perform in real life? I've been able to monitor 2 lines and get stats from each of them.
Both lines were dslmaxed on the 25th of April. Ironically it was anticipated that line 2 would have the most difficulty with adsl since this line is a few miles from the exchange and once told it was only capable of 512kbps.

Line 1
Is very close to the exchange and has always had good line stats and should be capable of far more than 8Mb speeds.
Yet it was this one that got stuck with a 2Mb bRAS profile. :/
BTw also decided to carry out some Planned Engineering Works on the exchange during the early hours of 11th May. Once the line came back up, it was stuck with a 2Mb profile, which took an awful lot of ticket tennis between my ISP and BTw to get resolved.
However, since this work has been carried out, latency and speeds are very good.

Sync Speeds and SNR margin is rock steady.
Best speed seen off peak, is 907.64 KB/sec (7261.12 kbps). Peak time speeds are variable around the 4 Mbps mark.

.

Line 2
One month on it still continues to hold on to sync at the full 8Mb, even though the line on occasion has reached negative SNR Margins. This line picked up its correct Data Rate after day 3. SNR Margin fluctuates vastly during certain times of the day, although it is now suspected that this may perhaps be down to some one switching something electrical on at certain times of the day since it isn't a gradual decline, but a rapid decline and back up again normally during the evenings. The root cause as yet hasn't been discovered.
Latency on the line is good, but speeds at both peak and off peak are not quite as good as on line 1 which is probably down to exchange congestion. Average Off peak speeds around 5-6Mb, Average Peak speeds 3Mbps.

Router
- BT Voyager 2100 + Solwise SAR110 - although the SAR gives worse line stats the SAR110 was used to be able to use snmp/mrtg stats.

Router
- Netgear DG834G
All credit to this router - look at it go. The line frequently drops to 0dB but still it holds in there.

Observations

Short line - Little fluctuation in SNR - no notable errors.
This line was stuck on the dreaded 2Mb bRAS profile for longer than the 3 days.
This line has had more or less rock solid line stats for 3 years, but interestingly the SNR Margin started to drop 3 days before it was max enabled.

Observations

This particular line was once told it couldn't get more than 512kbps. With the help of MrS from adsl-guide to change the BT database it achieved a solid 2Mb connection. Anticipated maxDSL speeds in the region of 4Mb.
bRAS profile set on day 3.
Obvious SNR fluctuations.

Result
- Full 8Mb as anticipated. Max speed seen 7.10Mbps.

Result
Full 8Mb - probably due to the Netgear.

Which one would you believe?.. bearing in mind I can look out of my window and see the exchange.
All these tests were done from the same phone socket
- although it doesnt make any difference from the main to extension.
